CJA is the professional association of the trial and appellate judges of the State of California, established in 1929.

The following describes the three insurance plans designed especially for CJA members and their families:

· Disability Insurance

Newly appointed or elected judges must wait five years after taking office for disability coverage under the Judges Retirement System and many judges feel that this is too long to wait for too little security!

CJA offers judges a policy to cover the five year waiting period underwritten by Standard Insurance Co. of Portland, OR. The disability plan insures 66% of salary (less any income from Workers Comp., State Disability or any other government insurance plan). Benefits are not taxable. You will be considered disabled if you are unable to perform the material duties of a judge, and you must have this confirmed by a physician.

There is no medical screening for this program if you enroll within 60 days of joining CJA.

· Life Insurance

CJA members and their spouses are eligible for up to $500,000 of term life insurance under this plan. $100,000 of term life insurance on the CJA member is automatically issued IF enrollment is made within 60 days of joining the association.

The policy is underwritten by Standard Insurance Company of Portland, OR. Premiums are age banded and increase in five-year increments to age 80, then ten year increments to age 100. Children are eligible for up to $10,000 of coverage. Permanent life insurance with level premiums is also available.

· Long Term Care Insurance

Many are worried that we will live long, but need expensive nursing home care that will outpace our savings and burden our families. CJA offers a group plan to cover the cost of long term care for members who could be independent if they had assistance with the "activities of daily living" (ADLs). This program is available to spouses, parents, parents-in-law, grandparents, and grandparents-in-law.

The policy is underwritten by UNUM Life Insurance Co. of America, Portland, ME, the country's oldest disability insurer. Premiums are based on your age at enrollment and the benefits you choose.

There are three benefit duration plans:
3 years, 5 years, or lifetime benefits.

Home care and inflation protection are optionally available. Acceptance is based on a medical history questionnaire, physician records, and personal assessment interviews.
